Lighting as architectural structure
DESIGN: MATA ARCHITECTS
PHOTOGRAPHY: Felix Speller
Set within a carefully reworked loft in London, this project by MATA Architects explores how light can quietly define space, rhythm, and daily use. Vaulted ceilings, softened transitions, and restrained materials form the backdrop for a lighting approach that is deliberate rather than decorative. Each fixture is placed with intention, responding to function, scale, and atmosphere.
The project has recently been featured in Elle Decoration UK, highlighting the thoughtful balance between architectural intervention and lived-in calm.
In the kitchen, I-MODEL Cordless introduces clarity without visual interruption. Suspended lightly above the work surfaces, its controlled, downward light supports everyday tasks while maintaining open sightlines across the space. The cordless expression reinforces a sense of precision and ease, allowing the architecture to remain uninterrupted while still shaping how the room is used.
The lamp becomes part of the structure rather than an object added afterwards. Functional, exact, and quietly present.
Above the dining table, X-MODEL defines the centre of the room. Its linear geometry creates a clear visual anchor, drawing the space together while distributing light evenly across the table surface. The result is a measured atmosphere that supports gathering without overpowering it.
In the bedroom, DONYA Pendant with Solar shade introduces a softer, more reflective quality. The light is diffused and indirect, shaping the room through gentle illumination rather than direct brightness. The Solar shade adds depth and warmth, creating a calm, intimate atmosphere suited to rest.
This project reflects a shared approach between architecture and lighting. One that values restraint, longevity, and precision over excess.
